As a language major or minor, a study abroad will enhance and strengthen your language abilities as well as build your confidence when speaking and listening. The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures has specific studies abroad destinations with which relationships have already been established so that students may study abroad without the burden of too much bureaucracy as well as feel assured that these destinations are safe and provide a good education and experience. Courses are prearticulated in most cases, and many other aspects (home stays, registration, excursions, etc) are already agreed upon. This site includes information about destinations, applications deadlines, financial aid, and FAQ's. Our department's faculty coordinates study abroad programs in Canada, Mexico, Spain, Italy, Japan, France and Germany. Select one destination from the list to the left for specific details.
When Allie first approached me about this I was very concerned. I had to be talked into it by her and her dad. Now, I am encouraging my son Matt to do the very same thing.
Allie had a great experience! She was with a couple girls she didn't know ahead of time from ISU but soon became fast friends. Her family was incredible. She is going back to spend 2 weeks with them in May as her "mom" had her baby "sister" after Allie left. She can't wait to see them again.
She got to travel a lot for very affordable rates. She got to try various foods and see the culture up close. When she returned home, she really missed Spain. There were a lot of things she preferred in that country and it took some getting used to being back in the states. My husband and I were fortunate enough to visit Allie while over there. The country is absolutely gorgeous! Mountains and the ocean...what more could you want? It is a very hospitable country.
Allie came home incredibly fluent in the language. I would encourage anyone to send their child to study abroad. Like I said, my son will probably be following in his sister's footsteps and traveling next year. It is an experience that you wouldn't get anywhere else.
If I can answer any more questions, I'd be happy to talk with anyone about this.
Our study abroad programs’ costs have been refined so that the cost is very close to the equivalent of a semester of tuition and room and board at ISU . Costs include tuition, books, airfare (in most cases), room and board, excursions and other extras.
All of our programs are in very safe places. Students are advised to be vigilant, not to direct attention to themselves and to walk in groups at night, just as they would here in the states.
You have chosen to major or minor in a foreign language. Our professors at ISU are highly qualified instructors who will give you a diverse education here on campus. However, nothing can replace living and studying in a country where one listens to and speaks the language in all situations. Students gain confidence and fluency in a study abroad that they do not on-campus at ISU. Additionally, the experience looks especially good on a resume and employers are more likely to hire someone who has had a study abroad experience.
Yes. If you study abroad at one of the locations that our department typically uses, we know which courses are offered and what credit you will get. Most of our study abroad courses will go directly toward major/minor requirements. If you choose to study at a location with which our department is unfamiliar, you must get a copy or copies of the course syllabi with detailed information about the University where you will study, the program itself, and the class and send it to the LLC advisor in advance so that she can have the language section look it over. The language section will then decide how the class will articulate and the advisor will notify you.
